Event Guide: GlamROCK! The Ball 2013

Glam Rock
Developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970’s, glam or “glitter” rock is a style of rock and pop music performed by outrageous and flamboyantly-costumed musicians like David Bowie a la Ziggy Stardust, Queen and Elton John, and has influenced modern stars like Lady Gaga and The Darkness. Characteristics of glam rock include outrageous costuming, rockstar showmanship, glamorous appearances and, of course,  theatricality.

WHAT TO WEAR? Anything goes! Over the top. Colorful. More glitter and sparkle than the Ballet’s costume shop. From basic black tie to anything but basic leather and feathers, outrageous hair and makeup… you’ll see it all at Milwaukee Ballet’s Ball. But don't take it from me - let's see what the city's savviest fashionistas have to say!

“More is more! It’s not done ‘til it’s overdone! Just one rule: make sure your ensemble has an edge. Imagine you’re the opening act for Gwen Stefani!” – Faye Wetzel, Faye’s 123.

Gentleman, live out your rockstar dreams! Tired of the plain black tux? Change up your look with some skinny ties, sparkle or heavy metal accessories, scarves and a studded belt, or swap out the suit coat for a leather jacket. Don’t be afraid. You’ll be in good company.

“You may not have the courage to dress like Steven Tyler or Mick Jaeger, but you can put a twist on your tuxedo with some updated accessories: a velvet jacket, a silk scarf, a long tie vs. a bow tie, and maybe even no tie with a hip shirt!” – Tim Ryan, Harleys The Store for Men in Shorewood
