The year is divided into two parts for me, waiting for the season to start and waiting for the season to end. And finally the season has ended and the summer has begun, a glorious time for dancers, at least for a while. The summer has wonderful, endless possibilities, but also last for a long, long time. So long that you can forget what it feels like to be working every day, and your days can stretch before you in endless lethargy if you are not careful. The key to preventing this is having a schedule and keeping busy. These were, are, my goals for the summer.
I am keeping busy by attending classes at UWM where I am a Political Science major. I am taking an Art History course, followed by a Holocaust class (a strange choice I know…depressing but terribly interesting). This helps gives me schedule and gets me out of bed at a reasonable hour. I am forced to study and write papers, and I realize that I enjoy school more than I would like to admit. It is nice for me to be removed entirely from the world of ballet for a bit. Studying other subject helps remind me that ballet is not indeed the center of the universe, even though it sometimes feels like it.
I also like to spend my time traveling when I can. I am returning home to Phoenix, spending time with my family and friends. I will also be traveling to throughout the East Coast to visit some of my extended family.
Above all I try to soak up as much of the summer as I possibly can. Bike rides and beach trips, Frisbee and gardening, happy hour and sleeping in, all of these leading me until I find myself waiting for the season to start again.
