Milwaukee Ballet Company Member Selected as Finalist for
Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival
~Petr Zahradnícek chosen as one of 12 Division 1 finalists ~
MILWAUKEE – August 24, 2010 –Milwaukee Ballet company dancer and choreographer Petr Zahradnícek is a finalist for the McCallum Theatre Institute’s Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival, a program dedicated to the advancement of dance as an art form, specifically through the support and promotion of quality choreography. His piece, There for You, is one of 12 finalists in the Division 1 category. Prior to being named one of the finalists, Zahradnícek competed against 107 choreographers from all over the country. There for You is a pas de deux excerpt from Zahradnícek’s Concourse ballet, which he debuted during Milwaukee Ballet’s 2009-10 season.
“This is a great honor for Petr, and Milwaukee Ballet is extremely proud of his accomplishment,” said Artistic Director Michael Pink. “His selection as a finalist is a testament to the commitment our dancers have for developing innovative new works for generations to come.”
The ballet is set to music by DeVotchKa, a four-piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero and Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots. Prior to his career with Milwaukee Ballet, Zahradnícek performed with European companies, as well as Gleich Contemporary Dances in New York City and the Colorado Ballet. This will be his eighth season with Milwaukee Ballet.
The Dance Under the Stars Festival runs November 13-14, 2010 at the McCallum Theatre Institute in Palm Desert, California. Performances start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 (Division 1) and 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 14 (Division II). Division 1 prizes include a $5,000 grand prize award; $3,000 second place award; and a Dance Under the Stars paid engagement.
