Milwaukee Ballet
We dance because we want to show the world who we are. We show up for every class and rehearsal because our art calls us to do so. We practice the steps until they look second nature, because they are. We perform because we have earned each and every moment at center stage.
We dance because what you see on the outside is nothing compared to who we are becoming on the inside.
Who will you become because of MBSA?
Students age 7 or older as of September 1 of the current school year. Children age 8+ with previous experience outside of MBSA should call 414-902-2100 to schedule a free placement class to determine the appropriate level of study.
Ballet I, Age 7-8
Ballet I is the first year of formal ballet training. Proper posture, class etiquette, and use of positions of feet and arms are emphasized. Students learn to identify points of the room and develop muscle memory, increase coordination and music recognition along with artistry and expression. Class meets once per week.

Ballet II, ages 8-9
Ballet II is for children who have completed Ballet I or have some previous ballet experience. Students develop a strong carriage of arms (port de bras) and begin larger body movements in classical posture. Stronger balance and jumps are incorporated while beginning preparations for turns. Basic épaulement for croisé positions are introduced to help develop artistry and expression. Class meets once per week.

Ballet III, ages 9-10
Ballet III is for students who have completed Ballet I & II, or have equivalent experience. Most work in Ballet III is done with one hand on the barre. Proper ballet vocabulary is and a full understanding of barre exercises are emphasized. Balance on one foot and two feet in demi pointe are established along with sustained leg lifts and proper foot position in tendu. Two-foot jumps and further épaulement are maintained. Classes meet twice per week.

Boys Class I, ages 7-10
Boys Class I concentrates on the steps a male dancer must master. Strength, stamina, elegance, and presentation are stressed. Boys Class I reinforces classical posture while placing more emphasis on allegro work, batteries, pirouettes, and the male athleticism of dance. Students develop the skills to understand classical ballet while building a sound technique in the context of safe dance practice. Classes are structure in progressive order to ensure that skills are learned at a basic level preparing boys for more complex movements as they advance in level. Class meets once each week.
Boys class I may be taken in addition to Ballet I, II or III or as an independent class.

The Intermediate Level becomes more demanding of the student’s time. Students training en pointe must attend class three times per week.
Ballet IV
Students continue to build on vocabulary taught in Ballet III and begin to work from 5th position while performing exercises involving weight shifts, pirouettes, and linking port de bras to leg work. More advance jumps are taught and balance in demi point on one foot becomes regular. Students are expected to retain 4-part combinations and appropriate head and eye focus. Character class is added to teach expressiveness and expansiveness of movement. Class meets three times per week, is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase in the spring. Students may be eligible to audition for Milwaukee Ballet Company productions.

Ballet V
Clarity in all work including body placement, feet and arm positions, and linking steps in complex combinations are required of students in Ballet V. Students should be able to sustain 90-degree extensions, perform simple pirouettes while spotting, and have an understanding of all Grande positions. Batterie is introduced in jumps. Pointe work is introduced in Ballet V. Class meets three times per week, is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in full school showcase. Students may be eligible to audition for Milwaukee Ballet Company productions.

Ballet VI
Ballet VI is for students ready for more advanced pointe work. Complexity of exercises and combinations of movement become more focuses and Grande pirouette, jumps, and full combinations are learned. Clear articulation of Batterie in jumps and double pirouettes are expected. Expansive pointe work is introduced including rolling to and from pointe, strong ankle placements, pas de bourrees en pointe, and one foot relevé with a controlled descent. Beginning jazz is also incorporated to Ballet VI. Basic jazz technique, terminology, movement quality and proper execution of rhythms and styles is required. Ballet classes meet three times weekly, are accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase in the spring. Students may also be eligible to audition for Milwaukee Ballet Company productions.

Ballet VII
Ballet VII is for students who have completed Ballet VI and are at the top level of intermediate study. Extended combinations, balance, and full coordination during exercises is learned. Clear position in Grande and Simple poses is expected along with clear petite allegro with batterie. Stable, multiple pirouettes and 8 fouetté turns and 135 degree penchée turns at the barre should be accomplished. Extended pointe work continues. A second level of jazz is taken to help dancers build an understanding of storytelling and body shapes in dance form. Ballet classes are accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase in the spring. Students may also be eligible to audition for Milwaukee Ballet Company productions.

Boys Class II
Boys Class II is a continuation of Boys Class I where students concentrates on steps a male dancer must master. Strength, stamina, and elegance are stressed. It is designed to reinforce techniques taught in classical posture while placing emphasis on athleticism of dance, strengthening allegro work, batteries, pirouettes, and presentation skills. A defined class structure allows learning to take place in the context of safe dance practice. Classes are organized progressively to ensure that students are prepared for more complex movements as they move through the curriculum. Students may take Boys Class II as a stand alone class or in addition to Ballet IV, V, VI or VII. Class meets twice weekly. is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase in the spring. Students may be eligible to audition for Milwaukee Ballet Company productions.
