Children's Division

Ages 3-6

Placement in Children’s Division is based on the student’s age as of September 1, 2017. All children must be fully toilet trained and comfortable entering the classroom without an adult.

Tuition Cost: 9 monthly payments of $88

  • Creative Movement

    Creative Movement is designed to introduce elements of dance to children who are 3 years of age. Students begin to learn from an instructor in a studio environment. Based on creativity, musicality, and imagination, students gain awareness of elements of dance before entering the Pre-Ballet program. Class is accompanied by live piano music.

  • Pre-Ballet I

    Pre-Ballet I is to children typically 4 years of age. Students develop body and simple muscle awareness, strengthen locomotor skills, and basic ballet technique. Classical posture and execution of exercises are introduced in Pre-Ballet I. Class is accompanied by live piano music and student participate in the full school showcase.

  • Pre-Ballet II

    More complex locomotor movements within the classical posture, including moving forward and backward, are introduced. Imagination and storytelling through movement are incorporated throughout the class. Students gain confidence and knowledge of personal directions and basic musicality. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in full school showcase.

  • Pre-Ballet III

    Pre-Ballet III builds on skills learned in Pre-Ballet I & II. Traditionally, students range from ages 5-6. More emphasis is placed on movement right and lefts, pointed feet, and straight legs within the classical posture and discipline. Upon completion of Pre-Ballet III, students should be prepared to start formal ballet training in Ballet I. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full showcase.

Student Division: Beginning

Ages 7-10

Students age 7 or older as of September 1, 2017 should enroll in Ballet I.

No previous experience needed.

  • Ballet I

    Ballet I is the first year of formal ballet training. Proper posture, class etiquette, and use of positions of feet and arms are emphasized. Students will learn to identify points of the room and develop muscle memory as well as increase coordination and music recognition. Free dance time is also included to develop artistry and expression. Class is accompanied by live piano and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Ballet II

    Ballet II is for children who have completed Ballet I or traditionally the age of 8. Students develop a strong carriage of arms (port de bras) and begin larger body movements in classical posture. Stronger balance and jumps are incorporated while beginning preparations for turns are incorporated. Basic épaulement for croisé positions are also introduced. Free dance is also incorporated to develop artistry and expression. Class is accompanied by live piano and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Ballet III

    Ballet III is for students who have completed Ballet I & II or are traditional age of 9 or 10. Most work in Ballet III is done with one hand on the barre. Proper ballet vocabulary is and a full understanding of barre exercises are emphasized. Balance on one foot and two feet in demi pointe are established along with sustained leg lifts and proper foot position in tendu. Two-foot jumps and futher épaulement are maintained. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Boys Class I

    Boys Class I begins for ages  7 and up. Boys Class I concentrates on the steps a male master must master. Strength, stamina,, elegance, and presentation are stressed. Boys Class I begins to reinforce the techniques of the classical posture while placing more emphasis on allegro work, batteries, pirouettes, and the male athleticism of dance. Students develop the skills to understand classical ballet while building a sound technique in the context of safe dance practice. Classes are structure in progressive order to ensure that skills are learned at a lower level preparing boys for more complex movements as the move through the academy. Class is accompanied buy live piano music and students participate int he full school showcase.

    Boys class I may be taken in addition to Ballet I, II or III or as an independent class.

Student Division: Intermediate

Ages 10-14

The Intermediate Level becomes more demanding of the student’s time. It is not unusual for students to remain in a class level for a number of years. Students training en pointe must attend class three times per week.

  • Ballet IV

    Students continue to build on vocabulary taught in Ballet III and begin to work from 5th position while performing exercises involving weight shifts, pirouettes, and linking port de bras to leg work. More advance jumps are taught and balance in demi point on one foot becomes regular. Students are expected to retain 4-part combinations and appropriate head and eye focus. Additional styles are introduced like character dance and folk art to teach expressiveness and expansiveness of movement. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Ballet V

    Clarity in all work including body placement, feet and arm positions, and linking steps in complex combinations are required of students in Ballet V. Students should be able to sustain 90-degree extensions, perform simple pirouettes while spotting, and have an understanding of all Grande positions. Batterie is introduced in jumps and maintaining stability on demi and pre-point exercised is critical when preparing for Ballet VI. Character dance also continues. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in full school showcase.

  • Ballet VI

    Ballet VI is for students that have completed Ballet V and show a strong foundation to begin full pointe work. Complexity of exercises and combinations of movement become more focuses and Grande pirouette, jumps, and full combinations are learned. Clear articulation of Batterie in jumps and double pirouettes are expected. Expansive pointe work is introduced including rolling to and from pointe, strong ankle placements, pas de bourrees en pointe, and one foot relevé with a controlled descent. Beginning jazz is also incorporated to Ballet VI. basic jazz technique, terminology, movement quality and proper execution of rhythms and styles is required. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Ballet VII

    Ballet VII is for students who have completed Ballet VI and are at the top level of intermediate study. Extended combinations, balance, and full coordination during exercises is learned. Clear position in Grande and Simple poses is expected along with clear petite allegro with batterie. Stable, multiple pirouettes and 8 fouetté turns and 135 degree penchée turns at the barre should be accomplished. Extended pointe work continues. A second level of jazz is taken to help dancers build an understanding of storytelling and body shapes in dance form. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase.

  • Boys Class II

    Boys Class II is a continuation of Boys Class I where students concentrates on steps a male dancer must master. Strength, stamina, and elegance are stressed. It is designed to reinforce techniques taught in classical posture while placing emphasis on athleticism of dance, strengthening allegro work, batteries, pirouettes, and presentation skills. A defined class structure allows learning to take place in the context of safe dance practice. Classes are organized progressively to ensure that students are prepared for more complex movements as they move through the curriculum. Class is accompanied by live piano music and students participate in the full school showcase.

Pre-Professional Division

Ages 14 and up

The Pre-Professional program is designed for serious dance students interested in and willing to commit to intensive study in a variety of dance styles.

Students must have approval from the MBSA Director to advance to Pre-Professional Division.

  • Pre-Academy

    Students will develop a stronger performance quality, extended time on pointe, more complex combinations, multiple pirouettes, and balon are expected. All leg work is well above 90 degrees. Jazz continues and Pilates in added to the curriculum. Extensive weekend rehearsal may be incorporated for various performances throughout the year. Class is accompanied by live piano music.

  • Academy I

    Students need to have completed Pre-Academy and have the approval of MBSA Director to advance to Academy I.

    Combinations become more extended and complex transitions are expected to be clear and expressive on both plat and pointe. Jazz and Pilates continues. Modern dance is also introduces to focus on fundamentals of dance, emphasis on the ground, qualities of movement, and personal expression through dance as the ultimate goal. Repertoire is also added to improve artistry and virtuosity in students. Students individuality and understanding of classical ballet is emphasized. Extensive weekend rehearsal schedule prepare is added to prepare students for performances throughout the year. Class is accompanied by live piano.

  • Academy II

    Students need to complete Academy I and have the approval of MBSA Director to advance to Academy II.

    Students are expected to have a solid and expressive technique on flat and en pointe. Jazz, modern dance, Pilates, and repertoire continue. Partnering work is introduced; students will learn to find their partner’s balance and lift with confidence and good technique. Trust and team work are emphasized in Academy II. Class is accompanied by live piano music.
